Dear Friends,
We warmly invite you to take part in our next Open Consultation Monday discussion event:
π
Date: Monday, 9 November 2026 π Time: 2:00 PM Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)
π¬ Topic: The G20 and South Africa’s exclusion: What now?
What happens when a G20 host excludes another member? What does this mean for the legitimacy of multilateral institutions, and how should South Africa and the wider international community respond?
This consultation will explore the implications of South Africaβs exclusion for the G20βs agenda, collective decision-making and representation in global governance. It will also consider how BRICS, the African Union and the United Nations might respond.
The discussion will consider:
- What happens to an agenda when the state championing it is excluded?
- How can states best manage and respond to exclusion?
- Should South Africa contest its exclusion, stay away or pursue alternative platforms?
- What precedent does this set for smaller or dissenting states within multilateral institutions?
The consultation will provide participants with an opportunity to contribute perspectives and recommendations towards a fairer, more equitable and sustainable international approach to critical minerals.
Open Consultation Mondays provides a space for open, informed and constructive discussion on pressing global challenges. We encourage you to join us and contribute your perspectives to this timely conversation.
